codependency treatment
Treatment for Codependency
As an In or Out Patient Because co-dependency is usually rooted in childhood, treatment often involves exploration into early childhood issues and their relationship to current destructive behavior patterns. Treatment allows co-dependents to rediscover themselves and identify self-defeating behavior patterns. Treatment also focuses on getting in touch with feelings that have been buried during childhood and on reconstructing family dynamics. The goal is to experience a full range of feelings again.
WHEN CO-DEPENDENCY HITS HOME
The first step in changing unhealthy behavior is to understand it. It is important for co-dependents and when possible their family members to educate themselves about the course and cycle of addiction and how it extends into their relationships.
A lot of change and growth is necessary for the co-dependent and his or her family. Any caretaking behavior that allows or enables abuse to continue in their relationships needs to be recognized and stopped. The co-dependent must identify and embrace his or her feelings and needs. This may include learning to say no, to be loving yet tough, and to be self-reliant. Codependents can find freedom, love, and serenity in recovery.
INDIVIDUALIZED TREARMENT
The Küsnacht Practice provides an individualized treatment approach to meet the precise needs of each client. And we only treat one client at a time so our whole team of doctors, psychiatrists, nutritionist and psychotherapists and counsellors work with just one person and their family. We look underneath the symptoms as a way to understand the function of co-dependent behaviour in the client's life. And once we find the causes we treat them using proven methods.
UNIQUE AND EFFECTIVE APPROACH
We work with clients to help them regain control over symptoms, resolve trauma, and allow them to develop the skills necessary to let go of their co-dependent behaviour in their day to day life. We employ some or all of the following therapeutic tactics in our treatment plans.

- We find out, using psychotherapy, the underlying psychological issues
- Testing and laboratory work to determine the nutritional needs of each client and based on the results our medical director, clinical director, nutritionist, traditional Chinese medical doctor and chef develop a plan of action. Biochemical restoration of the brain and central nervous system is a priority. This may include amino acid therapy.
- Erasing triggers and stressors using EMDR
- Massage, Reiki and Reflexology
- Meditation
- Yoga
- Art and/or music therapy
- Gym and outdoor training program
- Identifying and treating co-occurring psychiatric and personality disorders. Treatment includes hypnotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR, traditional Chinese medicine, and herbal medicine
- An intensive psycho-educational program including a custom made book on relevant topics for each client and family member involved in the treatment program
- Complete some or all of the 12-Steps of Codependents Anonymous
- Attend support group meetings
- Spiritual counselling
- Life counselling and life performance enhancement
- An extensive family program that involves, when appropriate, family members living with the client during some or all of the treatment program
- An intensive after care program for the client and family members. It involves daily telephone calls for the first critical period of time, connecting with other people in recovery in the client's home community when appropriate, return visits or a Küsnacht Practice team member visiting the client monthly and then quarterly for the first year and then on a declining frequency until the end of year three.
